Part 4 - LEARNING TO AGREE WITH GOD
David's Conversation With Himself
The Psalms quote David as saying,
“David encouraged himself in the LORD.”
David knew where his help came from and
that it came from GOD alone. GOD was his source.
We are on the story of David and Goliath
is found in the book of 1 Samuel 17: 1-50 KJV.
Read more in 1 Samuel or revisit Part 3 of the continuing Bible Study.
Just like David, we hear the comments of the enemy,
telling us what you can and can’t do
and what the enemy is going to do.
These are lies the enemy throws at us with thoughts
and with words to convince us to yield to a defeated foe.
Goliath was already defeated before he fell to the ground.
Because the words of David had already slain him.
David declared the results with words that went forth,
before the events unfolded and the victory materialized.
He made the decision to believe what GOD said was true, before he got in the battle.
This is so important to understand.
We need to know, and have our minds made up,
as to what we believe about GOD before we battle the enemy.
Instead of David listening to what everyone around him was hearing,
David instead told the enemy what GOD was going to do
and he spoke it so that Goliath and all his enemies
that were in opposition to his obtaining the victory,
could hear
just the opposite...
When the focus on looking at ourselves,
shifts to focus on GOD, our circumstances shifts as well…
David saw the enemy in a different way than all the others.
David knew who GOD was…so he asked the question.
And David said… "Who is this “uncircumcised” Philistine
that would come against the army of
the living GOD?"
He exposed the enemy’s weakness.
To be uncircumcised meant the enemies of God did not have a covenant
with GOD for their defense.
Circumcision in the Old Testament was a sign of the covenant
God made with Israel to be their defense.
You and I have a even better covenant today.
Jesus fulfilled the old and then released the new.
The remaining part of that verse reads..." that he (meaning Goliath) should (attempt to) defy (defile & defame) the army of the Living God.
David saw the situation as the enemy was coming against GOD not himself,
and he was attempting to discredit GOD, which provoked the zeal of the LORD
in David to destroy the enemy that would try to destroy God.
The enemy attacks us to discredit GOD just like he did with David.
If we could only see every sickness and all the battle we face
as against the LORD to get at GOD…we would see things from GOD’s perspective.
GOD said it is finished…
that means everything the enemy attempts to do
has already been defeated so that all we have left to do
is walk in the victory Christ had already won.
The enemy’s greatest strategy is
to get us to look away from GOD and to look at our circumstances.
That’s what happened to Peter…as long as he looked at Jesus,
He walked toward the object of His focus undaunted.
But the moment he looked anywhere else, he began to sink.
David kept his focus on GOD.
David was more concerned about GOD’s reputation not being destroyed
than he was about what other people would say about him.
Notice with David, it was about God’s name being honored,
more than it was about the circumstance that David faced...
and his own reputation being destroyed.
David maintained focus on God,
and declared beforehand to all that was present,
that God is a covenant keeping God.
David was not concerned about himself.
He knew he was already a part of this covenant with GOD
and that GOD was completely trustworthy.
That meant David was already totally covered by GOD.
We are in covenant today with GOD as well after we are born-again.
God’s got you covered too.
We just need to understand and walk in God's provision,
follow Him...be obedient, and trust God completely.
What was the final conclusion of the matter? Let’s read…17:50
“So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone…
and smote the Philistine and slew him,
but there was no sword in the hand of David.”
Why would the Bible say or point out there was no sword in David’s hand…
because the sword was in his mouth…
David was declaring and waving the Sword of GOD 's Word at Goliath
with God's own Word instead of wielding a physical sword in his hand.
We have the same “sword of David”
to wield against our philistine (enemies of God) as well…
we can use it and overcome just like David.
